(With Raw Google Search Console Data & Invitation to Join the Journey)

1. Why Share Every Detail of This Project?

Hi, I’m the founder of Solomaker Studio. Last week, I launched my first indie project: Middle Name Generator, a tool to create multicultural, multi-scenario middle names (for babies, pets, fictional characters). Unlike most who “build in private until perfect,” I’m choosing Build in Public for three reasons:

  • Fight the “success illusion”: Too many case studies only show wins. I want to share the real 0→1 journey—even when the data is ugly.
  • Leverage external expertise: You might know more about SEO or UX than me. Your feedback can save this project from costly mistakes.
  • Document growth: Whether it succeeds or fails, this is a valuable 实战 (hands-on) 复盘 for indie developers.

Today, I’m sharing raw Google Search Console data, current challenges, and my upcoming optimization plan—no sugarcoating. Welcome to “watch over my shoulder.”

2. First Week Data: The Truth Behind 0 Clicks

Here’s the “brutally honest” data from the first 7 days (2025.4.21–4.27):

1. Keyword Performance: Impressions, No Clicks

Top Query Impressions Rank CTR
middle name generator 12 97.08 0%
middle name picker 6 91.5 0%
baby middle name generator 1 84 0%
17+ Variations 1–4 90–99 0%

Core issue: All keywords rank outside the first 3 pages (Google’s top 3 pages capture 95% of clicks). Meta titles/descriptions lack differentiation, so users ignore the results even when they see them (CTR = 0%).

2. Traffic Geography: Global Reach, No Focus

  • Country breakdown: USA (17 impressions), Brazil/UK (5 each), 15+ other countries—yet 0 clicks. The tool’s “multicultural” angle attracts global interest, but it doesn’t answer: “Why should users click here?”
  • Device split: Desktop (34 impressions, rank 95.24) vs. mobile (10 impressions, rank 94.4). Slightly lower mobile rankings suggest potential issues with mobile UX or page speed (a top priority for optimization).

3. Site Performance: Functional, But No Reason to Stay

  • Backend data: Average session duration is just 15 seconds, with 80% of users leaving after one name generation. The tool page lacks context—no name meanings, cultural explanations, or usage scenarios—making it hard to build trust or encourage returns.

3. The First 30-Day Plan: From Invisibility to Relevance

Based on the data, I’m focusing on “Content to Drive Traffic + Tool Iteration + SEO Breakthroughs” with goals: 10 keywords in top 50 by end of May, 5% CTR on the tool page, and 100+ seed users.

1. Break SEO Cold Start with Scenario-Based Content (Weeks 1–2)

Why? New sites lack authority; standalone tool pages rarely rank. Content acts as a “bridge” to attract early traffic.

  • Actions:
    • Launch a “Middle Name Guides” blog with 2 weekly posts:
▶ “How to Choose a Baby Middle Name: 3 Key Dimensions + Chinese/Japanese Examples”
▶ “Crafting Fictional Characters: 100 Fantasy & Modern Middle Name Ideas to Define Personalities”
    • Target low-competition long-tail keywords (e.g., “Chinese middle name meanings,” “fantasy middle name ideas,” KD < 30) with “problem-solving + concrete examples” to attract niche searches.
    • Embed natural links to the tool in posts (e.g., “Generate your pet’s perfect middle name below” in “How to Name Your Pet’s Middle Name?”).

2. Optimize First Impressions: Make Users Click (Week 1)

Key action: Revamp meta tags (Title + Description)

  • Old title problem: Generic “Middle Name Generator” lacks appeal or differentiation.
  • New title formula“Unique Value + Use Cases + Call-to-Action”
▶ Main keyword: “AI-Generated Middle Names for 20+ Cultures | For Babies, Pets & Fiction”
▶ Long-tail example: “How to Choose a Baby Middle Name? Free Generator with Cultural Meanings (Chinese/Latin Options)”
  • Description upgrade: Highlight “free + unique value,” e.g.: “Enter a first name to instantly generate matching middle names (with cultural origins and usage scenarios) across 20+ cultures—start creating yours now!”

3. Tool Iteration: From “Usable” to “Irresistible” (Weeks 2–3)

User pain point: Dry results with no emotional or practical context.

  • New “Name Stories” module: Show each middle name’s cultural origin (e.g., “‘Sakura’ (Japanese) – symbolizes purity and hope”) and ideal use case (“Perfect for a gentle baby girl or a Japanese-inspired novel character”), building trust.
  • Enhanced filters: Add “style tags” (Minimal, Vintage, Mythical) to let users refine results, increasing time on page.
  • Shareable posters: Let users generate image posters with names and stories for social sharing (targeting 30% UGC-driven traffic).

4. Invite You to Co-Create: Your Input Shapes the Product

The heart of Build in Public is user-driven development. I’ve added a feedback form—tell me:

  • Which culture’s middle names would you like most? (e.g., Indian, Arabic, Nordic)
  • What features should we add? (e.g., “exclude certain letters,” “phonetic matching”)
  • What’s your biggest challenge when choosing a middle name?

Every week, I’ll prioritize top-voted requests, develop them, and share progress on solomakerstudio.com—making you the “product manager.”

4. Why Share Imperfect Data?

“You have 0 clicks—why publish this?” Some ask. My answer:

  • Authenticity over perfection: In indie development, 99% of time is spent fixing flaws. Hiding data disrespects readers.
  • Weak data = big opportunities: Every problem is a growth lever. “0 clicks” mean massive meta tag optimization potential; “low rankings” signal unclaimed long-tail keywords.
  • You’re not a spectator: If you’re building something similar, my lessons can speed your progress. If you’re a user, your feedback directly shapes the tool.

5. What I’ll Share Weekly

  • Mondays: Project 周报 (Weekly Report) on solomakerstudio.com—keyword rankings, feedback updates, new feature demos.
  • Wednesdays: 3-min “Data Snapshot” on Twitter/Weibo—charts of impressions, CTR, retention rates.
